Homemade Stromboli with Ham, Cheese and Broccoli

Homemade Stromboli meals are a great way to get dinner out to the family all in one dish. The great thing about these enclosed pizzas is that you can place any ingredient you want in them, hitting the entire food pyramid in a one course meal.

Homemade Stromboli

This Stromboli recipe uses pre-made pizza crust dough so you can make it as thick or thin as you want. And any kind of meat can be used instead of ham, so if you like chicken in your Stromboli, use chicken. Just make sure the meat is fully cooked before adding it to the mix.

The Homemade Stromboli is made using the stove top and the oven and overall takes about 45 minutes to prepare and cook total. Most of the cooking is done on the stove top. This particular Stromboli serves three to four adults.

Homemade Stromboli with Ham and Broccoli

Ingredients:

One (1) Cup Ham, Cubed
One (1) Cup Broccoli, Chopped
One Half (1/2) Cup Red Pepper, Chopped
One Half (1/2) Cup Sweet Onion, Chopped
One Half (1/2) Cup Mozzarella Cheese, Shredded
One Half (1/2) Cup White Cheddar Cheese, Shredded
One Half (1/2) Cup Parmesan Cheese, Fresh Shredded (not powdered)
Two (2) Tablespoons Mayonnaise
One (1) Tablespoon Butter
One (1) Pillsbury Thin Crust Pizza Dough

NOTE: To cut down on the calories, you can use an equal amount of Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise to reduce the calories and fat by a significant amount. You probably won't even taste the difference.

Preparations for the Stromboli

Saute the broccoli, ham, peppers, and onion in butter on the stove top. The ingredients should be soft to the touch, but not mushy.

Frying Ingredients

Ball up the pizza dough into a large ball then roll it out evenly on a large cookie sheet or pizza stone.

Mix all of the cheese with the mayonnaise.

Spread three quarters of the cheese mix in the middle of the pizza crust.

Add the Cheese to the Dough

Pour the sauteed meat and vegetables over the layer of cheese.

Add the Ingredients on the Cheese

Fold the sides of the dough to cover the meat and vegetables until the pizza crust dough totally surrounds the insides of the Stromboli.

Carefully flip the Stromboli over. This was a difficult task, but my brilliant wife put a dinner plate over the Stromboli, flipped the cookie sheet over and then slid the Stromboli back onto the cookie sheet.

Sprinkle and spread the remainder of the cheese mix on top of the dough.

Add the Cheese to the Top of the Stromboli

Baking the Stromboli

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the cookie sheet with Stromboli in the center of the oven (uncovered) and cook for twelve (12) to fifteen (15) minutes.

The Stromboli should be a golden brown and smells great.
